(This is in response to another thread, but also posted as a new thread to hopefully increase feedback)

Add my name to the list of folks in Eastern NC whose generac (Model 43093 LP) died during Irene.

Mine was installed new in '06. This is almost cliche by now, but I've always had a problem with it cooking batteries, and am on my 4th one now. The third one exploded! (I did file a CPSC report, as suggested elsewhere on this forum)

It cranked when power went out late Friday night/early Saturday morning as Irene approached. Ran a couple of hours I guess? Then shut down with an overcrank LED lit.

Now it does the 15 second run, then off, then on for 7, etc.

Had fuel pressure checked and looks fine.

Performed test #70 and run winding voltage was non-existent, or very low.

Performed test #6, and got ~11.5 volts.

I tried flashing the field (#4 wire removed from J1-1 and jumped to battery 12V), and did see an increase in run winding voltage output. However, the VR LED never came on. Should it? And if so, could a bad VR cause this error? Or does this look like a bad run winding?

Any help, ideas or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Walt

Time to replace the charger before battery #4 blows up.

Check your battery float charge voltage. If it's above about 13.5, you need to replace the Generac charger with the new version, or disconnect it altogether and install a proper battery tender on a generator backed circuit.

Thanks Canada_Guy. Yes Sir, have already taken care of it. I completely disconnected the battery charger and installed a trickle charger/maintainer.

I almost spit up my coffee.... please, for the sake of humanity, do not offer this as a viable solution in the future to a battery related problem... :D

#1) I am not sure which model this is.

#2) I am not sure what problem you are having - 15 second run? or 15 second crank?

#3) Depending on your problem, the flowcharts in the diagnostic manual are there for a reason. If you are going to try and diagnose / repair yourself, then you are best served to follow the tests outlined in the flowcharts. If you skip around and do some random tests based on what you think sounds like the problem, you will end up just chasing rabbits.

Walt - would that be a Generac 4390-3 generator?

Skip - Yes sir, sorry. It's a 4390-3.

The 45 sec./ 7 sec. trial is normal. If the engine has not started in 90 seconds of the crank/rest cycles, shutdown will occur(overcrank shutdown). The PCB uses AC signals from the STATOR engine run winding as an indication that the engine has started. Check the stator output. If not the right output readings you'll need a good VOM to read the stator ohm windings and the service manual for specs. If you don't have the factory manual, someone here can tell you how download it. Nice to have the factory manual but may not be worth purchasing it from ziller if the stator is bad, may not be worth replacing the stator unless you can do it yourself. Previously somewhere on the forum, someone posted that the stator and rotor now come as a package, can't buy them individually. Pretty big $$$$.
