Have a Model 5875, 999cc Engine. Manual says to gap plugs at .030 , but factory setting was .040. Generator seems to run fine most of the time, but why are the plugs gaped at .040 instead of the proper setting. Did they just put in plugs without checking the gap? Which gap should be used, and which gap would work better for Quiet Mode Test ?

I prefer to keep the gap between .025-.030 on the air-cooled units.

I set them at .025 Sometimes closer on older units.

Per another thread, I pulled our plugs (the threads were bone dry) and I applied anti-seize compound to make future removal easier.

I remembered this thread and decided to check the gap since we have the same model. The gap was .040 from the factory instead of the specified .030 for us too.

So far, our unit has run fine with .040 - so I left the gap alone. I'll remember to reduce the gap if I have starting or running problems. Has anyone noticed the need to reduce gap as units get more age on them?
