thanks murphy, i will continue to track it.
maybe my old battery was behaving differently on the unit due to age ( 4.5 years in unit ) ??
hate messing with my door so much, it is aluminum and those tabs are getting stressed.
will be good to know though what is going on .
seems like the new battery provided less cranks on startup on 7/2 , iirc , if that seems logical.
appreciate your help.

catfishjohn, here is an easy way to see if the charger is working. Measure the battery while the machine is at rest, turn the gas cock off so you can crank the engine without it being able to start, put the start switch in manual and let it crank through the full cycle then turn the switch off. Watch the voltmeter as the unit is again at rest, battery voltage should slowly climb from the 12.8 up to roughly 13.6 - 14.0 volts. Turn the gas cock back on.

will try this first thing tomorrow ." full cycle" here is 7-10 cranks usually before it starts.
hope thats what im looking for .
gas cock is different than the NG/LP knob ?
silver on/off unit like on a motorcycle?
thanks , a bunch

What we're looking for is just a way to pull the voltage of the battery down enough to trigger the charger to start it's cycle, so with the gas shut off and a good long crank it will show us enough to continue the diagnosis. The gas cock is external of the generator on the line/pipe.

Well, it does look like the charger is working right now, hopefully it continues to do so, the next few days should tell you a little more, enjoy the time at the get-a-way. My 4th will be next week, heading to the lake cottage a couple of hundred mile north, all of us Michiganders HAVE to go UP NORTH.

Enjoy all of the time you can with your family even though at times it can be difficult, our life on earth is short. It's been in the 90's in Alpena but supposed to cool down into the 80's next week, should be good. Take care.

thanks,
this old battery i pulled out  from 2015 is sitting at 12.80 a week later
the new one when arrived was 12.70.
i thought thats kinda strange.
aside from that data, would there be any reason to charge this old battery before installing
into my 4runner?

12.6 vdc is considered a full charge for a disconnected battery, looks like you should be good to go in the 4runner.
