The install manual calls for the generator to be at least 5 feet away from the house.
According to NFPA 37, if the enclosure is made of non combustable material it can be closer than 5 feet.
What material is the 7KW enclosure made from? I would like to go to 3.5 feet if possible.

That document is referring to the surface of the building wall, not the surface of the generator housing.

I'd be interested to find out if NFPA 37 has changed. It used to be that you could locate the generator as close as 18" to the house wall though I would always want at least 36" for work access. The 60" spacing from openings in the building is the same as the older Generac publications show.

Mine passed at the 18" requirement as listed in the Generac documentation. My inspector said they default to the manufacture's recommendations since it is a fire rated enclosure.

It is best to check with the local inspector. They may have amendments that will supersede the code. Also it depends on where you are. I think Florida is one state that doesn't recognize the 18'' space Generac states. Their position was the testing was not done by a recognized testing lab and Generac would not publish the testing.

Is the generator enclosure in fact fire rated?

Generac says it is tested, but they won't say who did it or publish the results. Because of that, a lot of inspectors treat it as if it were not fire rated. Some inspectors are willing to take Generac's word and treat it as a fire rated enclosure.

The Generac brochure for the 7KW unit says that the enclosure meets NFPA 37 with a one hour fire rating.
