I have a 22kw generator.  I went out to change the oil and when I pushed the manual start button nothing happened.  I could go between off and auto.  After a call to Generac, they put me in touch with a service company.  After talking with them they said maybe I needed to reset the control board so I shut all power to the board down.  After 15 min I put power back to the unit.  When I did, the manual button blinked for about 5 seconds then stopped.  I then tried to reprogram the unit and I only was able to get to the language setting.  I could toggle thru the choices but when I tried to push the select button nothing happens.  Do I have a bad control unit or am I missing something?

How old is the generator? Sounds like a dead battery. It wouldn’t turn over and also could affect controller operation. Post your model and serial number. Our techs out there will need that to help you further if needed.

Yes, as Geoff stated please include as much info as you can about the machine, model, serial, type of fuel, last maintenance, last repairs, age of battery, etc.

New battery.  Started on its own this week.  Natural gas.  Put in Oct of 2016.  Model G0070430, Serial # 3001242919.  Oil change 6 months ago. No repairs as of yet.

OK, so I'm confused, did you put the new battery in after your first post and now the unit is working? or did you change the battery recently and then the unit would not start? I also see red flags due to needing a new battery in a two year old machine and oil change 6 months apart. Do you have the ability to check voltage at a few terminals, we need to see dc readings at the battery and ac readings at the transfer switch or terminals at the generator.

The unit has been working fine - runs every week in test cycle. I live in an area that has outages in the winter which is why the oil change. When I went to change the oil the Manual button did not light up when pushed.  I could push the off button and it lights up.  I could go back to auto and it would light up.  The trouble shooting line told me I must have a bad control unit because when I push the button nothing happens.  They put me in touch with a service facility and they tried to trouble shoot it with me on the phone.  I was told to remove all power to the control board by disconnecting the battery and unplug the wires to the board and it might reset after doing that.  I tried to reprogram the unit.   The language display comes up but I can only toggle the top and bottom buttons thru the choices. When I try to set to English it won’t set.

It does sound like the controller is at fault, the part should be covered under warranty. If you have been working with an authorized Generac dealer they can help with that end of it.
