I have a Model # 0062440/ serial # 8558129/ 20 Kw Lp. Was installed 03/10/2014. I have had no problems with this unit, I just want to be sure I am up to date with the latest software/firmware.
Current Version: Firmware is V 1.12
Hardware is V 1.05
Boot-loader is V 1.00
E-prom is V1.03

latest firmware is V 1.20

looks like your generator will benefit from an update. In V1.15 will get rid of your stepper motor buzz,

I would say that 1.17 is probably the latest update that directly affects your gen. The other updates above that are mainly for the aux shutdown switch :)

Question

Can I get the latest firmware"1.17" on line and do it myself, or do I need to have a dealer do it?

I generally recommend a dealer do this since they'll already have it on hand and will have the correct USB drive. If you brick your controller and it wasn't a dealer that did it, you're kinda screwed...

You would need instructions and a password that are not distributed to the public by Generac. We are not allowed to publish or discuss these items on the forum.

We're dealing with copyright issues here.

Hire a Generac-licensed dealer to do the update.

the firmware update is in the edit menu, not in the dealer menu that would require the password. ;)

Which is odd, because you need the password to reset the maintenance intervals. It is what it is.

Aren't the dealer passwords included in the service manual? I know mine is.

and yet software updates are available all over the place along with instructions for less than $40.

one dealer quoted me $200 for software and $80 service fee!

We charge a service call of $50 or $90 depending on distance.. that is all.. literally a 1 minute job.

Their is a product information bulletin that was posted on the web site below. It gives you lots of useful information, but you would still need to have dealer access code to get access to the latest firmware down load. I am a little confused as to why Generac would not want their equipment updated with the latest firmware. Especially if it would prevent a customer from having future problems. Most all manufactures do automatic firmware and software updates or they make it available on line to their customers. My unit is still under warranty so I will contact my local dealer and ask them if they can do it. Keeping your Dealer information proprietary on the latest tech is understandable, but 4 year old tech is not exactly cutting edge stuff. I like working on my own stuff when it is not under warranty. I've owned and installed 2 of the last 3 of my Generac generators since Y2K. I currently have 2 20Kws, one I installed in 2012 and one a contractor installed in 2014.
Thanks for all the help and information :)

Generac is oddly secretive about their firmware, both in limiting access, and refusing to discuss why some changes were made. Yet they are by far the biggest seller of generators to do-it-yourselfers, plus electricians and contractors who are not factory authorized. They will activate those generators without issue, and freely allow sales of service manuals and repair parts. Just no firmware updates. Perhaps they are concerned about it being reverse engineered?
