gotcha
Hello, ten year ago I bought a 8 Kw standby Generac, Model # 0055010 Serial # 5883756.  RTS serial # 5836273 It worked for many years properly,  I have 177 on the hour meter ( installed by myself ).  But two month ago I could not start the generator anymore.  Not any light burns at the control panel, fuse still good.  But swithing to the manual position results in nothing, no cranking, nothing.  We are living on a small island in the Caribbean, finding replacements parts is impossible, all have to be imported from the US.  Will it be possible to bypass the control panel and hotwire the generator ?.

No. The control panel powers up everything. Have you pulled out all fuses and tested them. Also try disconnecting ALL wire connectors on control panel and waiting a minute, then reconnecting all wires....reboot controller

Check the battery and make sure you are getting full battery voltage to the large lug on the starter which is where the unit picks up the battery voltage.

Hi guys, I tried all those things, I have been in electric / electronic trouble shooting for many many years.  Believe, no I am sure controler board is damaged.  But I found a way to go around the controler.  Actualy it is very simpel if you can read and understand the circuit diagram.  The engine needs only propane to be started. The coverner keeps the speed and will adgust if the load is getting bigger.   I modified it my way, took the controler board out.   Works perfectly.  I only have to swith manualy from grid to generator.

Must be an older unit.
The modern units include the voltage regulator, frequency control and overcurrent protection circuitry in the controller.

Even if it would be a older unit, it worked out perfectly.  By disconnecting / bypassing the controler, it will not switch off at overload, voltage or frequency out of range, etc.  But at least it is running.  I measure the frequency, current and voltages wilth build in meters in the RTS panel.  Maybe I will buy in the future a new control panel.  But for now I am happy with my own build solution.

I certainly understand your situation.
If I were you I'd probably do the same thing.  Just be sure it has good airflow, and keep a close eye on the oil level, as those safety systems are also disabled.

  • Thanks for your input.  Yes, I will keep een close eye on it.  I am surprised Geoff Z is not responding to this issue, ten year ago he sold me this generator. In that time we have been in close contact by e-mail.  But don’t hear anything ?, he is still on this forum I noticed.  Maybe busy with more important things.  Thanks again for responding Cobranut.

I am here. However not a technician. I stay out of the way unless I have something to offer. I defer to this great bunch of kind hearted technicians. We are very lucky they are willing to spend time here and help all of us. We have had every phone line in our building lit all day every day this week. Helping as many desperate people in the dark as we can. I’m an old man, my mind is mush. I can’t even hazard a guess how many people I have emailed and talked to this past week. Please forgive me if I don’t remember everyone and everything. I’ll get up and go in on Monday and help more people the best I can. Nobody should ever have to endure the stress we were under this week. I just remember how blessed we are. Ask for strength and dig in and help as many desperate hurting people as we can. We’re just one small company. We cannot be everything to everybody. However we try the best we can.

Oh I forgot to say, In my spare time that I don’t have, I do my best to maintain this forum so you all have a place to go for help. I hope that counts for something.

Geoff,

Unfortunately, you're not in my area, and I haven't even been your customer yet, but you and the very knowledgeable people this forum were a priceless asset to me when I was doing my rather unconventional install.
You are very much appreciated.  Hope you have a more sane week next week. 😎

As a homeowner who has been helped multiple times by the techs on this forum, I am extremely appreciative of Ziller for hosting it.

As good as the techs here are, the techs for the company who installed our generator cut corners and left me with a generator in the middle of January at 10 degrees that wouldn’t run.  The kind folks here recommended I adjust the valves, and problem solved.  The techs should have done that under the service contract.
And I’ve been helped many times by this forum after that.

Thanks again, and I will continue to buy my service parts from Ziller, as I know they will always send me the right part due to their attention to detail.

Everything going on in the today makes it hard to see goodness in the world sometime. I do know it is right here though. Watching folks help each other causes me great joy. All your participation here is just enough and in no way ever obligate anyone to do business with Ziller.

This forum has been invaluable for me as well.  I have a 12 year old 7/8 KW model and am on my second controller and third battery charger.  This forum was so helpful in helping me diagnose the problems I had and to help me fix them.  Thanks!

I think you guys are the best ! I have relied on you guys to help me out several times and everything you have helped me with either solved my problem or enlightened me as to how to look at the problem. I am the go to guy at a hunting/fishing club in the middle of the woods w/o electricity and a bunch of guys that are lucky they can tie a fly on their line without help so thank you guys for everything you do. We all need you and appreciate you very much !
