Are there Generac dealers that will perform warranty service on self-installed generators. I have emailed several dealers about purchasing an extended warranty, and they respond back with "you should contact your installing dealer". Sounds like if you do a self-install, you're out of luck.

I installed my own generator, and also bought an extended warranty.

I didn't have a Generac Dealer do my install and have had warranty work performed. Seems that the dealer's you have called simply don't want to do warranty work and would rather charge full retail. Check Generac's website for dealers in your area and look at their ratings, you'll probably find one to help out. That is what I had to do when I got the same reply you did trying to find someone to handle warranty issues.

We adopt your type of customer! We will offer a maintenance contract, as during an emergency, those customers come first. We never turn down a customer in need.

Thanks Pville. I followed your advice, went on the Generac website and found a local dealer with excellent ratings, that is offering me the extended warranty at a great price.

There was new verbiage added this time around with the new 5,7 & 10yr.
This was taken right from the Generac dealer flyer.

"What’s Required?
•UnitmustbeactivatedbeforeExtendedLimitedWarrantycanbeapplied.
•UnitmustbeunderapreventativemaintenancecontractwithaGeneracAuthorizedServiceDealer. Proofofpreventativemaintenancemustbeprovidedatthetimeawarrantyclaimismade.
•ExtendedLimitedWarrantymustbeactivatedbyaGeneracAuthorizedDealer.
•UnitmustbeinstalledbyaGeneracAuthorizedDealer.
Refer to Generac Extended Limited Warranty Statement for complete details. Only the 5 Year Extended Limited Warranty is available for SynergyTM.
*The 5 Year Extended Limited Warranty not applicable to Honeywell air-cooled models."

That being said.
I would not deny someone an extended warranty that was already installed within a year of activation, providing that it had no major install issues and looked unsafe. I would also verify permits were pulled.
Only catch would be the customer must agree to a yearly maintenance contract.

Why wouldn't a company adopt a customer? It doesn't make any sense. I have to track down dealers for my customers all the time, and it blows my mind how many companies refuse to perform service work (make $$) and lock in a potential service contract because they didn't sell the generator.

Very poor business practice. If dealers are total jerks to me while I'm asking them to help a customer out, I simply make a couple phone calls to Generac about them, and sometimes they are removed as a service dealer because they will not take care of a warranty call.

We just quoted a service contract for a location 4 hrs one way. 4 other dealers in their zip code! I don't understand either. Seems some dealers have a "poke it with a stick attitude?" Perhaps we can make a little money. Perhaps being dedicated to the brand and servicing units for 20 years is what they need to consider! Not did I make $1,000 for a couple days work. $200 avg per year for 20 years? $4000 per customer! Don't get it! You ever need us Mr. Kelly, we are here!

I don't think that there must be any connection between self installed generator and services offering. There are many people who installed there own generator and get a good generator maintenance NJ for their generator maintenance. :)
