I have a Generac 2000IQ, it is 5 years old but has no more than 4 hours use on it. The gas has been maintained and freshened during its life. Recently I went to use it, it starts fine but the idle with no load at all pulsates up and down continuously. You can see the arm on the carb going back and forth from what I assume is the electric idle control. What could be the cause of this issue?

What I normally see with small gas engines is varnish in the carb. from fuel evaporating. These little engines have very small fuel/air passages and it doesn't take much to partly block them. You can try mixing a strong mix of Gum-Out in the tank and run it, let it sit a few hours and run it some more, empty the tank and fill with normal gas and Sta-Bil or another good fuel stabilizer.

I install fuel shutoff valves on all my small gasoline engines, and always run them dry when finished using them.  I also use StaBil in the fuel.  Rarely do I have any problems with stored engines.

You will most likely need to replace the carburetor.

Thanks for the replies. After further diagnosis, I found that the idle jet in the carb was completely gummed shut. I cleaned it out with a  tiny drill bit and the engine purrs like a kitten now.
