I installed a 04456-2 generac 12 kw about 14 years ago. For the past two years I get an intermittent flashing overspeed during weekly exercise. I followed the old troubleshooting manual for adjusting the governor. Voltage output is 242 volts no load and 60 hz. 0 to 4 wire resistance is 26 ohms. I just replaced the battery and faulty battery charger yesterday.

1. Does the flashing overspeed mean rpm loss like it does for the 5000 series? If not what does it mean?

The 5000 series troubleshooting manual has addition steps like checking wire 18. Is this relevant to the 4000 series?

what are some possible causes?

Thank you

The battery charger was intermittently failing to charge when it got hot.

On those models flashing overspeed is no AC output. The unit is not catching a field flash due to dirty slip rings. It can be fixed by cleaning the slip rings and brushes normally. If it persist then instal;l a continuous field flash kit which will solve the problem another way. Left unattended it will ruin the Voltage regulator.
