Awesome forum! I'm hoping someone can help me out with there experience. I hane a model 0055040 s/n 5100668 n.g. 17kw generac that currently has 15 hrs on it. I recently noticed that it was not doing its exerciser cycle. So this weekend i opened the cover and checked the status and alarms. It had a RPM loss error. The status was Ready To Run so i tripped off the my main breaker to see if it would start.

The display said "cranking" then i heard "clicking" ( almost sounded like a starter solenoid) coming from inside the control panel an then the control panel reset and went to the install wizard to set up the time!

The generator did not start. According to the display the battery voltage is good. What next?

5 years ago, when my 7KW unit was installed, the starter motor failed two months after the installation. The starter motor would run but the bendix drive (or whatever they have in there) would not engage to turn over the engine. They replaced the starter motor and it's been fine since then.

You still need to verify the battery is good. A Hydrometer is the best way. You can still have a bad cell and be reading proper battery voltage. Make 100% sure before you go running a bunch of tests on the unit.

So is the starter solenoid in the control panel? As i mentioned the Clicking noise that "sounds like a solenoid" is without doubt coming from inside the control panel.

I'll put another battery on it tomorrow to confirm the battery is good.

Can't the auto parts store do a check on the battery, before you buy a new one?

You are probably just reading battery charger voltage in the display. If you put a meter on the battery as you crank you would see it drop if the battery were bad. Most of the time it is just a battery when I come up to the unit and get the clicking sound. Try a fresh one and if you still get the same results let us know and we can take it further.

Why was the battery bad? I would check the charger output.
