Hello everyone,

Just installed a new 17kw 5873, I have been reading here of the exploding batteries so I checked my voltage at the battery and it was 14.2 volts. I also checked the display on the control panel and it also showed 14.2 volts. From what i can gather by looking at my wiring and the schematics is the charger is built into the control panel. How would I disable the charger so I could install a battery tender.

Do us all a favor and make monthly checks on the electrolyte level in the battery. If the level does not go down over a few months, then you shouldn't need to worry. The 14.2 volt measurement may have been made with the charger operating, and whenever it starts it runs for at least an 18-hour cycle. The cycle is re-started if the battery voltage is taken below a threshold or if the generator's engine is re-started.

Most of the exploding battery incidents have been with Generac models that are now several years old (like mine - a 2008 model). We're hoping that the charger circuit in the 5800 series units does an acceptable job of maintaining the battery by itself but we need several folks to report performance to the group here.

I was planning on checking it in the morning and will report back.

I checked it again its down to 13.15 volts. I will monitor it for a week. The battery is a maintenance free type so I wouldn't be able to check it. I guess I will have to keep that in mind the next time I buy a battery.
