Happy Friday All
My weekly exercise started fine but sounded a bit choppy, i went out to take a look under the hood of my generator attempting to fine tine the throttle.......(which has worked in past).  i started smelling an electrical burn and observed the alternator giving off smoke where the alternator intake bellow is.  i immediately turned off generator. oil was at normal level.

this is a 8k unit the 5501........has anyone ran across this before?

im assuming the alternator is toast.

thanks

If you had smoke coming out of the air intake that would indicate either that the air path is blocked or the fan has failed.  With air flowing into the intake it should not be possible for anything to come out.

I agree with Murphy on the theory of airflow. It won't take much time to investigate the issue. Remove the left end sheet metal access covers and the rubber intake bellows, you should be able to turn the cooling fan by hand - if you remove the spark plug the engine will turn over pretty easy. You might get lucky and find the smoke source being the starter/cable or maybe the brush wiring. If the smoke was coming from the alternator then it is probably trashed, some resistance readings with an ohm meter will tell us what is/was overheating.

Check with Ziller in the morning on separate parts, normally sold as a matched set, you will also want new brushes. How do the slip rings and brushes look on the existing rotor? You can check resistance from ring to ring and should see 9 - 12 ohms with zero continuity from either ring to the shaft.

interesting enough the 8k doesn't have slip rings or brushes..........i will research more to see if rotor is damaged

the 6 wire to capacitor is burnt also

The capacitor is the VR on that model, Generac switches designs, I can't keep up with the changes without actually laying eyes on it.

Just out of idle curiosity: Can you post what the root cause was?  So we can learn how to avoid the problem?
