I have an 8K that I installed about a year ago. One of the circuits it is connected to my 6800 CFM evap cooler. Prior to the 8K, I had a 20 year old 3.5 portable Generac that I used as backup power.

The 3.5 ran the evap with a 1 HP motor without a problem. The 8K will not. When the evap switches on the motor attempts to start and then immediately stops. The pump runs OK.

It seems that the electronic controls in the evap do not "like" the 8K. Any ideas?

I presume the cooler has a magnetic contactor like an air conditioner that pulls in to start the 1 hp motor. Watch what is happening with that contactor when the motor is trying to start. See if it stays pulled in or drops out immediately. Also I would test the capacitors on the motor to confirm they are within specs. My guess is that the cooler doesn't like the droop in Hz it sees when the fan starts. On your 3.5 KW portable the mechanical governor was probably set to 63-65 Hz no load and was able to get the unit going. The electronic governor starts at 60 and then droops. There may be some things that can be done to the cooler that will make it more tolerant of the new generator. You should talk to the mfg. about that. Peddler

If so, there have been quite a few firmware updates and it probably is a couple behind.

Yes it is the evolution controller. Last update was about 6 months ago.

The cooler is only a fan and does not have a LRA as a fan. The motor draws only 7 amps running on low and that typically means about 14 amps on start up. That should not cause a significant drop in Hz. I think it's something to do with the electroncs in the low voltage controls.
