Sure you can. However, you still need to meet all applicable electrical codes. Included in this is the requirement that the generator be sized to handle ALL LOADS that are automatically connected to it by the transfer switch. The total load can be controlled by load shedding equipment, but that can add significant cost to the package.

Can I run a sub-panel from the 50A? That would give much more flexibility wrt number and sizes of circuits.
